Sent by Adam Ouologuem and written by Bruno Loma
The 19th World Championship Taekwondo runs from 14 to 18 October 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark. In the Danish capital, our compatriot Daba Modibo Keita (87 kg) defended his title of champion world heavyweight won in Beijing (China) in 2007. And he has done brilliantly in clambering on top of the podium, winning the shot gold medal.
Daba Modibo Keita (born April 5, 1981 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire to Malian parents) came to to Copenhagen where he retained his title as world champion in taekwondo. In other words, he took revenge on his poor performance at the last Olympics in Beijing China. Indeed, when everyone dreamed of the first Olympic medal for our country, Daba Modibo Keita was eliminated in the quarterfinals, causing a huge disappointment in the country. It is the Nigerian Chika Yagazie Chukwumerije who had almost ruined hopes of retaining his world champion title.
Aware of the task awaiting him, Daba Modibo Keita was well prepared to defend his crown in the Danish capital. "This is the highest level of competition. This is not an easy thing to defend my title. Being world champion is a step, keep the title is another. I'm sure I'll be the man to beat other competitors. But I am a top athlete and I'm used to manage this kind of pressure, "he declared before the competition.
With this coronation of Daba Modibo Keita, Taekwondo confirms that Mali is doing wonderfully. South Korea, which has always dominated the competition since 2003, had to settle for the silver medal. The third place went to Kazakhstan, which then received a bronze medal.
In the category of Welters, France won the gold medal in women.
It should be noted that his delegation includes 7 fighters, including 4 girls. On the issue of Beijing, our country was represented solely by the Daba Modibo. One way for the Malian Taekwondo Federation to increase its medal chances.
