Break up the text
First of all, you should make a reader want to read your text. If what they see is a wall of text, their desire to spend time and effort on it will evaporate. How your text looks defines whether more than a half of your readers will even start reading it.
Breaking it up can be done with paragraphs, headings, bullet lists, images, quotations, etc. The text must be interesting and attractive to look at before anything else.
Insert key information in headings
There will be a part of people who will skim through the text without actual reading. To make sure they get your message, too, put it in the headings. It’s hard to not read the heading when you are looking at the text.
Tell a story
The art of storytelling is understood differently by copywriters, brands and writers. In its simplest form, it is just a story told to illustrate what you are trying to tell (the high quality of the product, the reliability of the producer, etc.) People love a good story and it has a bigger power to draw attention than anything else.
Try answering questions your readers might have
The best copywriters have this skill of anticipating and answering the questions of their audience. Ideally, by the end of your text all possible questions have to be answered and all possible doubts have to be addressed.
Write in a conversational tone, vary long and short sentences
A well written text draws you in from the very beginning – that’s because it sounds like a very interesting and friendly person talking. You shouldn’t overload your text with difficult words and long sentences, just as you wouldn’t overload your speech with it. You writing should flow naturally, as if you were talking to a friend that you trust and respect.
Add humor, but not too much of it
Humor is a bad instrument for ads, but a good one for website pages. A nicely used joke or two will spice up your text and compel people to continue reading. Don’t overdo it, however, or you might come off as arrogant or foolish.
The best definition of copywriting was given back in the beginning of the XXth century. It’s salesmanship in print. No matter what text you are writing, you are selling something. And if so, you need your readers to be interested and at ease. The rest are technicalities.
