Aisha Buhari, wife of Nigeria’s archaic President Muhammadu Buhari, is stridently asserting herself with power play designed to show that she doesn’t belong to the kitchen, as her husband had forcefully argued last week. First, as soon as he returned from Germany where he had disparaged her, she decided to jet out on her own to Belgium; secondly, she decided to ignore the ‘poor Aisha’ label by putting on her $2,600.00 cape in an over 88 fahrenheit degree weather.
As if that wasn’t enough, she has been caught in Belgium shaking hands with men. Remember, when the seven women ministers were sworn in in Nigeria, the six Muslim women from the North refused to extend and Buhari didn’t offer to shake their hands, as the Yoruba Finance Minister Adeosun followed suit by not offering to shake hands with Buhari.
After last week’s fierce fight, it would appear safe to assume that she was told “if you don’t agree to belong to the kitchen and the other room,” you are on your own. It would appear Aisha has decided to be on her own. I prefer the new Aisha, well so far as she stops analyzing constitutionally mandated ministerial appointments.
