Onyeani’s Letter to Africa: Obama Must Go For The Jugular in Debate

On Tuesday, October 16, already jittery Obama supporters will be tethered to their television watching with anxiousness every move that Obama makes to counter whatever falsehood that his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, will be spewing during the 90-minutes debate.  It would be the same anxiousness they showed before the vice-presidential debate on Thursday, October 11, when Vice President Joe Biden faced off against his Republican rival Congressman Paul Ryan.  After the debate, it was the Democrats who were celebrating while reversely conservative commentators were accusing Mr. Biden of being rude, disrespectful, laughing.  It is at moments like this that you know that your candidate won.

On that question of laughter, according to Mike Taibbi, Contributing Editor of Rolling Stone, “But he should have! He was absolutely right to be doing it. We all should be doing it. That includes all of us in the media, and not just paid obnoxious-opinion-merchants like me, but so-called “objective” news reporters as well. We should all be rolling our eyes, and scoffing and saying, “Come back when you’re serious.””

Taibbi went on to accuse the press of not calling out Romney/Ryan of telling lies and not being specific on their proposals.  “Sometimes in journalism I think we take the objectivity thing too far. We think being fair means giving equal weight to both sides of every argument. But sometimes in the zeal to be objective, reporters get confused. You can’t report the Obama tax plan and the Romney tax plan in the same way, because only one of them is really a plan, while the other is actually not a plan at all, but an electoral gambit.

This time around, Democrats are hoping that Obama would do to Romney what Biden did to Paul Ryan.  He understands that his presidency is on the line.  He understands that he afforded an opportunity to a snake oil salesman like Mitt Romney, during the last debate to deliver a bushel of manure to the American people, and Americans who seem to be more interested in the fluff that Romney is all about went for it instead of the substance.  This time, Obama must go for the jugular and asphyxiate the lies Romney has been perpetrating on the American people.  In the wrestling world, it is called no-holds-barred and he has to employ any means necessary to put away the impostor.

There are three jugular veins of lies that Romney posses that Obama must not allow to go unchallenged.  Last time, Obama said he was being too polite; being polite is not going to save him his presidency.  He behaved like those Negroes of old who when the white man is talking to them, would be looking down on the floor, and why he continued to look down is beyond imagination.  Last time, the right-wing nuts were happy to see Romney manhandle Obama with disrespect and disdain.  It was George W. Bush who shouted to Senator John Kerry during their second presidential debate in 2004, “Fool me once.”  Obama’s mission must be to so decimate Romney that the conservative media would be so angry that they call him all kinds of names.

The first question has to address is on economic patriotism.  It shouldn’t be on the kind of economic patriotism that Obama has been talking about.  Economic patriotism should be about believing in American economic exceptionalism, and on this core, Romney has bet many times against the economic interests of America.  Obama must bring up the question of Romney’s off-shore investments.  How could an individual who is running for the position of the president of the United States of America be betting against the economic interests of the country, by putting his money in Swiss banks accounts as well as in the Bahamas and Cayman island.  There is no honor in not talking about it.  Voters must be reminded that this man who so much loves the country, prefers to put his money away so that he could avoid paying taxes.  Obama must hit him hard on this issue.

Medicare is another issue that Democrats shouldn’t be having problem winning.  What is the problem of reminding voters that Republicans had opposed the creation of the program and have always voted against it.  The idol of the right-wing nuts, Ronald Reagan campaigned against the program, and warned that “Medicare would lead federal officials to dictate where physicians could practice medicine, and open the door to government control over where Americans were allowed to live. In fact, Reagan warned that if Medicare became law, there was a real possibility that the federal government would control where Americans go and what they do for a living.”  It is sad that seniors, just like the poor whites, are voting against their own interests, seniors not realizing how the Republicans have always opposed medicare, and poor whites not realizing that the Republican Party is for the rich.

The third issue is women.  Every question Obama answers must pivot back to the issue of women.  They his most loyal supporters, unfortunately except for married women.  Obama must remind women the first law he signed into law was the equal pay for women, which Republicans fought against, and which Romney has not indicated that he would have signed.  Obama must remind voters that he has appointed two women Justices to the Supreme Court.

Despite the hallowed and bogus utterances of his opponent, Obama has a great record to run on.  He should be very proud of having rescued this country from the abyss of catastrophic economic depression, which is what it would have been had George Bush continued in office.  He rescued Wall Street, though those dogs that he fed have come back to bite his hand of friendship as they continue to amass more and more wealth under Obama’s administration as the stock market has soared more than 100% since he took office.

If Obama tells the truth against Romney’s lies in the most forceful manner, Americans will see through the mask that Romney has won to try to sneak into the White House.  They will stop him cold.

Indeed a wakeup call for Obama and the Democrats to show and tell what they have brought to work for the American people. Great article.

  2. Mazi Ogbonna says:

The article above is very compelling and hitting the nail in the right angles. In addition to the above, President Obama should pivot his question when the opportunity comes that:

    1) Killing Osama Bin Laden and decimating Al’queda keeps American safer. Also by accomplishing the mission in Afghanistan, our troupes should come home to hero’s welcome. In turn there will be some financial saving from n war to invest in programs and jobs for veterans.

    2) Obama care: He should pivot that he campaigned to give every American the opportunity to good health care system which no president has been successful at. That he is convinced that healthy Americans are equally as important as a healthy economic especially when “Obama care” saves money for the average American. Any savings to Americans is an economic progress in the right direction.

He should find a way to reiterate that what is good for the geese are also good for the ganders. Then he must immediately interject (pivot), how come the elected “Officials” who clamor for “Small Governments and in turn against Obama care” turn around to enjoy a similar system by tax payers’ funds? In order words why should a few people enjoy and talk down on others who should also enjoy the good thing?
He should hammer Romney as a flip flopper for shifting his positions for political expediency, especially on health care issues. He should cite Romney Care which has mandates as well. Obama should emphasize that all Americans (100%) Americans should be allowed to enjoy any program, especially a health program that saves lives and money. He should pivot that the Federal Government is there as a level playing field for all Americans irrespective of States of Origin. That means that American needs to relocate to another State because of Health care issues.
On ballooning spending, Obama should emphasize that he has a long range plan not to saddle Americans with debt. He should pivot that, it was the degree of the economic woes that he inherited that triggered the debt situation. But unlike Romney, he had to invest in Education, Obama care, Green energy that will ultimately dig us out of our problems. He should cite an example of people borrowing money to g to school to become better citizens as doctors, lawyers, journalist, engineers, nurses, teachers etc. He should cite example as of people who borrow money so that they can start new businesses to manufacture some thing or sell services to churn the economic activities needed to grow our economy.
The emphasis should be that some times, a visionary individual, company or government should know when to borrow money to use as a leverage for successful ventures that lift us all. Unlike Romney who is wealthy and may not fully understand the problems of the middle class, he(Obama) believes that people should not fold their hands or stop making attempts to lift themselves up, even if it means borrowing needed money for successful ventures in business and education.
He should say all these things with conviction and energy. His tone must be forceful, respectfully and loud and clear. He should not hold back and no professorial tendencies which bore everybody including his staunch supporters.

    Thanks.

Thank you, Mazi. We are all on tinders as to which Obama will show up tomorrow. Hopeful he wouldn’t do more damage to our dignity and take the fight to that snake oil salesman. You need to read the article that David Stockman wrote about Mii Romney, “He Was a Master Financial Speculator,” the excerpts of which I will be posting soon. Remember, David Stockman was Ronald Reagan’s Budget Director. Very devastating article, which the msm has refused to pick up.

    Tummaa/Sellaam/Greetings, Chika & All:

I am one of those Non-American, African descent individual, who has been aware of both physical and emotional meanings of the so-called democratic (non) worlds, for over 45 years. I was/am a peasant/serf background, originally from the Aristocratic system of Ethiopia/Kambaatta. The Aristocracy was replaced by a semi-Fascistic Military Dictatorship, which declared itself, a Military Socialist, in the mid to late 1970s. While running away from the Junta (though I was trained to become an Aviations Officer, due to poverty), I had a first hand experience for six months in the former Communist Dictatorship, in Romania (Bucharest). Then, I had another chance, via my political Asylum times, in the refugee camp, in the democratic and Muslim dominated country, Turkey (Istanbul), before I begun settling for the past 34 years, in Canada (Toronto).

Thus, comparatively speaking, I am one of those very few African descents, in the Diaspora and/or in the Continent, who had to work very hard and earn four (4) degrees. Based on that background, I have been following all forms of political developments globally, and mainly in the USA. I was so sad when I observed the Presidency of the Former President Jimmy Carter was taken away, by a former Movie Actor, President Ronald Reagan. Then I was surprised to learn that, the V/P of the President Reagan, George Bush (I), who also happened to be a high level of Security Officer, to became a President. I was so relieved, when I witnessed the Former President Bill Clinton, with comparatively humble socio-economic backgrounds, yet highly qualified Lawyer/Politician became the President. As a result, the American economy started to change, positively in the 1990s. Yet, after President Clinton’s second -term, his V/P. Al Gore’s chance was somehow taken away, when the decision had be made by JUDGES, which I thought was a loss for the voters.

Finally, after eight (8) years of the former President Bush (II), I observed American People making a true use of their DEMOCRATIC power to elect the FIRST EVER AFRICAN/BLACK descent, President BARAK OBAMA, with high level of VOTES, to become its LEADER. No matter how many people would like to talk about the President, I have witnessed many changes over the past 2/3 years. In the year 2008, Americans were facing many problems, including: Unemployment, Economic Deficit, High Levels of Military Expenditures, Wars in many fronts, Very Low levels of Relationships in Africa, Asia, Europe, and elsewhere. Yet, right in front of my eyes, I start reading and seeing positive developments. Certain changes and developments of certain safety-net-work, for the poor and disabled peoples, being reported, at time by a “VERY RELUCTANT” and politicized reporters, using all kinds of media outlets. From time to time, I even saw or read certain individuals of African ancestry attempting to minimize the President OBAMA’s hard work, to save the USA from failing into social and economic depression, that is comparable to the 1930s. But, things could not change over night. Yes, for sure, socio-economic and positive political changes are taking place, in the USA. Even if one believes it or not, mainly people of African ancestry, the current leadership of President Obama, has been showing us possibilities of positive forward: Employment, Obama-care, support for students, relationships abroad, and other positive potential outcomes.

Finally, as a non-conservative/reactionary and/or non-Republican, ideologically, in the post dictatorial world, I beg all progressive people in general (People of African, European, Asian, and First Nations Ancestry), and those members of of Africa-American communities in particular, to shed all kinds of internal differences (Gender, Sexual Orientation, Abilities, Religious, Moral, Economic levels, and otherwise), to go out and cast your votes for President Obama and the Democrats. Personally speaking, I have seen, worked around, and read about, Multi-millionaires/Billionaires for many years. I also think there is no problem to become a well to do person financially, as long as it is a product of ones hard work, like that of President Obama and his wife. I am not a rich person at all. But, I have liberated myself from Peasantry/Serfdom, by starting full time employment at the age of 15, and attending the evening classes, in rural Ethiopia, some 45 years ago! Currently, I am a parent of two hard working daughters in University(one of them in a PhD. program in the USA), married to a Social Worker, and I am quasi-retired Social Worker! From my many years of work related experiences, I have observed that, the very rich people may pretend that they care for the Poor, women, children, disabled, people of colour, home-less people, and those who belong to the LGBTQ communities. But, I always found that, theirs is what is/was called: The Corcodile’s Tears! There may be a very rare ones (Buffet?), who may be willing to share a few dollars with the poor, often for the purpose of Taxes. From what I know in my cross-global and cross-social-class witnessing/analysis, I believe that, those who are/were historical and currently disadvantaged, can only gain certain levels of advantages, by choosing/electing, the Leader (s) who is/are a bit closer to their LIVED-EXPERIENCES, and those who RESPECT THEM.
